Annual Financial Checklist
The once-a-year review every household should run on cash flow, beneficiaries, coverage, and goals.
A financial plan that runs in the background still needs a few moments of attention each year. This checklist lays out the rhythm we keep with clients, season by season, and shows when to expect a call from us.
The year at a glance
January and February
Update contribution amounts for the new year’s limits, review last year’s tax return, and rebalance if the portfolio has drifted from its target.
March and April
Tax season reminders, including the deadline to fund prior-year individual retirement account (IRA) and health savings account (HSA) contributions.
June
A mid-year check on retirement contributions, beneficiaries, and any changes coming in the second half of the year.
September and October
Open enrollment decisions on health plans, flexible spending accounts (FSAs), and group life and disability coverage.
November and December
Year-end moves such as tax-loss harvesting, charitable giving, Roth conversions, and confirming required minimum distributions (RMDs).
Anytime
Life events to tell us about right away, from a marriage, birth, or adoption to a job change, an inheritance, or a home sale.
Put the year on your calendar
Print the checklist and keep it where you plan your year. Most of this work happens in the background, and the “Anytime” list is where a quick call from you makes the biggest difference.
